ART EXPLORATION FOR AGES 8-12
 
July29-Aug1 MTWTH 10am-12pm + lecture/art show Aug10 6-8pm
Cost: $100, supplies included

In this class we will: 1. Discuss the principles and elements of art. 2. Practice drawing from observation. 3. Discuss basic human proportions. 4. Experiment with basic color schemes. 5. Practice paint application. 6. Discuss and practice simple linear and atmospheric perspective. 7. Have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.

Once tuition is paid, your spot will be reserved in the class. Class size is limited to ten students. Tuition is refundable through June 10th. After June 10th, tuition will not be refunded.


 
 


FIGURE DRAWING AND PAINTING FOR TEENS AND ADULTS

Cost: $300 not including art supplies

One of art's greatest challenges is figure drawing. For artists who make work depicting people, figure drawing skills are a necessity. In this class we will work from a model in a leotard or two piece (or bike shorts for males) and: 1. Practice drawing gestures to quickly capture the essence and movement of the figure. 2. Quickly see and depict shadow shapes. 3. Draw on toned paper with an emphasis on contour, value and shape accuracy, expression of marks, and manipulation of edges. 4. Learn about proportion and basic anatomy. (Homework assignments will be given before class.) 5. Make an oil painting with a figure in a composed setting. 6. Have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.

PAINTING A SELF PORTRAIT

This class is for teens and adults who have taken at least one painting or drawing class before. We will 1. Use acrylic and oil paint to create a self portrait. 2. Practice creating soft and hard edges, accurately representing shapes, and emphasizing temperature shifts. 3. Practice creating form and depth within the picture plane. 4. Practice creating eye movement using repeated colors. 5. Have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.

PLEIN AIR LANDSCAPE PAINTING
 
Aug5-Aug7 MTW 5-8pm (Additional Beginner's Instruction MTW 3:30-5pm) + lecture/art show Aug10 6-8pm
Cost: $200 for the 5-8pm sessions, not including supplies or Preliminary Beginner's Instruction. Extra $70 ($270 total) for students who would like to participate in the additional beginners instruction from 3:30-5, not including supplies.

In this class we will find a painting site each session and paint the living, breathing landscape. We will: 1. Learn to quickly capture shapes, light and shadow with oil paint. 2. Simplify the landscape into strong designs. 3. Concentrate on painterly edges, the light effect, shape relationships, and rhythm. 4. Have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.

MODELING & DRAPING THE HUMAN FIGURE WITH MICHAEL HALL

In this class we will learn from a true master sculptor about modeling and draping the human figure. Good drapery not only shows an understanding of the fabric, but also of the human figure underneath. Michael will show us his methods for posing the model and the fabric in order to create beautiful gestures and rhythms within a design. We'll also have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.

STILL LIFE PAINTING

In this class we will: 1. Talk about composition and design in the choice and placement of objects and light. 2. Practice oil painting fundamentals, mixing colors, etc. 3. Practice creating form and depth within the picture plane. 4. Use hard and soft edges and saturation to create emphasis. 5. Have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.

PAINTING JESUS
 
Aug2-Aug3 FRI-SAT 10am-5pm + lecture/art show Aug10 6-8pm
Cost: $250 not including supplies

Depicting Jesus Christ presents a particular artistic challenge. Our approach for this class will be to begin a painting of Jesus using our imagination and then use master paintings to help refine the structure of our imagined portrait. We will: 1. Create an acrylic underpainting. 2. Paint into oil glazes over the acrylic. 3. Focus on values and temperatures. 4. Work toward attaining a fluid picture plane. 6. We'll also have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.

COMPOSITION: FROM IDEA TO CANVAS
 
Aug8 THURS 10am-4pm + lecture/art show Aug10 6-8pm

Taking an artwork from idea to full scale can be a daunting task. In this class we will: 1. Create multiple thumbnail sketches and choose our favorite. 2. Enlarge the sketch and refine it using tracing paper. 3. Create a color sketch or Premier Coup. 4. Block in the composition on a larger canvas. 5. Refine a small section of the larger painting. 6. Discuss methods for capturing details within a large work. 7. We'll also have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.

FAST FIGURE: THE GESTURE IN PAINT

This class is for adults. We will work from the live, undraped model. We will: 1. Create a series of small, quick paintings. 2. Capture light and shadow shapes as quickly as possible on a small panel. 3. Consider volume and proportion of the human figure. 4. We'll also have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.

BUSINESS PRACTICES 101

In this class we will discuss practical issues of making a living as an artist. We'll discuss improving productivity, sharing and publishing your artwork, pricing, organizing your art business, archiving your images, reviewing contracts, etc etc. We'll also have the opportunity to participate in the guest lecture and art show on August 10th.
